Recently, Panim Hadashot-New Faces did one of our signature Home Shabbat Experiences in the Greenwood area. The gathering took place on Saturday evening and ended with a beautiful Havdallah. As with most of our Shabbat home gatherings that our team enhances, we encourage hosts to invite new faces. Shoshana (pictured with her son above), our host, invited among her friends, a young Jewish woman who had recently moved to Seattle after a divorce. The woman lived in Edmonds and had difficulty meeting other Jews since she did not have a car and was recovering from a work injury.
Shoshana knew her and invited her to her Havdallah knowing that the intimate gathering at her home would be an ideal place for a new face to attend and be welcomed. By the end of the evening, she was exchanging addresses with other guests. She told me it was the first real connection she had made to Jews since moving to Seattle months ago.
This is what Panim Hadashot-New Faces does every week we are in a home or monthly at our Community Shabbat Gatherings. Through our emphasis on hospitality and welcoming, through our sharing the experience of the joy of Shabbat, through our efforts to support Shabbat gatherings at people's homes, we connect people to each other and foster new relationships and friendships as well as spiritual growth.
We need your help to impact lives through the mitzvah of hospitality (hachnasat orchim). By focusing on this mitzvah we are able to open the door to our Jewish community and welcome people in.
But it costs money.
As Convener and Director of Panim Hadashot-New Faces I have engaged wonderful musicians who bring an incredible experience of Jewish music and group singing to homes all over Seattle. It is not fair for me to ask those musicians to do their magic for free. I pay a competitive rate in order to get musicians like Ari Joshua, Chava Mirel, and Daniel Salka.
We have been creative at finding space to share Shabbat with the community. We have chosen to do our activities in a co-working spaces, first Works Progress in Greenwood, now WeWork in Bellevue and Seattle. These spaces are accessible, functional, and free for events because we pay rent to have a desk. Instead of renting a church or another facility which might cost us over a thousand dollars a month in rent, we pay $350 a month with no limit on our activities. By keeping our overhead low we make inspiring Jewish experiences more accessible.
I love this work and take a large cut in salary so I can focus on what I am passionate about. But I also need to have enough livelihood to make it possible for Panim Hadashot-New Faces to exist and pursue our vision to renew the tradition of Shabbat Hospitality.
